Kelly’s Korner: Show us your vacation! Iowa and Beaver Island!

Two totally NOT normal vacation destinations, but my FAVORITE!!!!

Iowa is peaceful, calm, relaxing and wide open.  There is nothing that can compare to a day spent at the town pool, followed by 4 wheeler rides and cooking fresh picked sweet corn to the sunsets that paint the vast skies beautiful colors of brilliant orange’s!  When we are visiting, we go to the town pool, Adventureland in Des Moines, and if we have time we like to go to the Omaha Zoo!  None other than that!   I realized I didn’t talk about Beaver Island!  I heard my Freshman biology teacher talk about her summer spent up on Beaver Island and great it was.  Well, that stuck with me, may have been the ONLY thing that stuck but I knew that when I was able to go, I wanted to visit this mystical place.  The time came and in the summer of 2011 we made the 8 hour trek up to Charlevoix, MI.  Now when you go to small towns you should check ahead of time if you plan on staying the night, because we did not know this was the weekend of the town festival and all the hotels were booked!  We drove all night to catch and 8a.m. ferry over to the island.  It was an 2 hour ferry ride where your car is loaded on and your ride a top.  The rides have always been fun and relaxing but when you see the island it is exciting and you can’t wait to get off!  When we arrived we would go to our place we would call home for the week.  There is a hotel but if you go to the Island you stay in a cabin/rental home for a week.  This is in Northern Michigan and you want to go sometime after June to early September unless you enjoy cooler weather.  We also discovered that if you go the last two weeks of July try to get a place on the West side of the island because on the east side there are biting flies that hatch during the end of July.  Not a fun time at all when you want to hang out at the beach!  You can drive the whole island in an hour, mostly by dirt roads.  There is a library and you can get a library card as a guest to the island.  There are 2 lighthouses and even the coolest toy shop!  My kids save their money to spend there because it has a ton of dime store toys for 25 cents to $2.00.  The water is warm for Lake Michigan, and you can go out really far before it drops off!
